Resistance training.... are you in it for the longevity?
Even more reasons why you should be working out
Let's be honest, most of us workout because of the way it can help us look and feel. And of all forms of training, it's resistance training (lifting weights!) that for most of us will produce the results we're looking for. It's also more important the older we get, to help prevent the age related decline in strength or muscles, connective tissue and bone. That's not to say, for example, endurance training doesn't have it's merits. But there is NOTHING more research proven than a good resistance training program to improve your overall health and longevity. So, apart from helping you look good, here are some more reasons why you should stay in the lifting game for the long haul:
Lifting weights improves cardiovascular function and helps prevent cardiovascular disease.
It improves immune function, helping our bodies to fight off potential diseases as we get older.
It improves bone strength (just Google Wolff's law and you'll see why), and there's strong evidence showing it to help fight against arthritic conditions through encouraging formation of new osteocytes.
It helps delay and even prevent sarcopenia and muscle wasting diseases.
It improves mental health, and reduced likelihood to suffer from depression - Important for men especially as we get older.
It improves endocrine function and helps maintain hormonal balance.
It improves blood flow, and sexual performance!
You know the benefits now. You've now just got to go and do it ;-)
